A consultant sonologist at a tertiary referral centre was negligent in failing to appreciate, when carrying out an ultra sound scan of a child while she was in utero, that the scan showed abnormalities of the child’s brain indicative of holoprosencephaly (a severe malformation of the brain caused by the failure of the forebrain to divide into two).
