Insurers to pay out $1.5bn for sexual abuse by US priests

Insurers for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles could pay as much as $1.5bn to victims of sexual abuse by priests, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times. The plaintiffs’ attorney said that the payout was based on his request for a $3.1m settlement for each of more than 500 individual claimants in Los Angeles county, whose allegations relate to incidents occurring as far back as the 1950s.
