Court can order compulsory treatment

Where a court can be convinced that medical treatment is a necessity and in the best interests of the patient, within article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights, it has the power to over-ride the patient’s refusal of treatment. This in refusal of judicial review of a certificate issued by a consultant forensic psychiatrist ordering regular anti-psychotic treatment, against the wishes of the patient.
