Call for “inerting” systems

In an article appearing in New Scientist of 5 October 2002, aeronautical engineer at the University of Michigan, William Kauffman, argues the need to implement the 1996 recommendations of the US National Transportation Safety Board. These stemmed from the loss of TWA flight 800 with 230 deaths shortly after take-off from New York, the most likely cause of the crash having been a spark in the fuel tank.
