Transmission-related acute lung injury (TRALI) is seen as an under-recognised and preventable hazard, possibly accounting
for 500 fatalities a year in the US, according to researchers (details in New Scientist 28 September 2002). The condition,
usually mild but sometimes lethal, is triggered by antibodies in donor blood.
