Legal costs increase Lloyd’s deficit

Despite an overall surplus of £119mn (£77mn in 1999), the operating deficit of the Corporation of Lloyd’s of London rose from £9mn to £25mn last year. An important factor in this is the cost of defence against actions brought by Names. So far this has cost the corporation £20mn, though not all in the last year.
