GMC complaints remain in house
Despite a record number of complaints filed against doctors – up from 3,000 in 1999 to 4,470 the next year – the General Medical
Council has rejected proposals for reform of the disciplinary system through judgment and prosecution of those facing charges
of serious misconduct by independent bodies. Rather, it has opted for a ‘hearings agency’ run by its own staff, with prosecution
and adjudication remaining in house.
