Going green in more ways than one

Simon Petch, Toby Royal and Michael Folsom, at Watson Farley & Williams, debate the move towards sustainable finance for shipping

International shipping accounted for around 2 per cent of global energy-related CO2 emissions in 2019. While shipping is the most energy efficient way to carry cargo, the transportation industry in general, and shipping in particular, has not historically kept the pace with some other industries in terms of decarbonisation. Combined with increasing cargo volumes, the result is that shipping-related CO 2 emissions have in fact increased since the year 2000, not decreased.
