Mental health worries
Mental health problems among seafarers are getting worse rather than better with an industry report citing an increase in
ships’ master requests for counselling support. Analysis of data generated by Mental Health Support Solutions (MHSS) for the
three months to the end of February 2021 showed that anxiety among those onboard ship remained a growing issue, with burnout
and depression being widely reported. According to MHSS, burnout and depression require a sustained and long-term approach
to treatment.
