DAV to settle Essen breast cancer claims

German insurer Deutsche Arzte-Versicherung Allgemeine (DAV) to settle a major medical liability case for €10mn. This involving 169 women who received false diagnoses of breast cancer, for unexplained reasons, from Essen-based pathologist Professor Josef Kemnitz, in many cases undergoing unnecessary operations and other treatment. Professor Kemnitz died in a laboratory fire, which also destroyed most of the samples comprising potential evidence.
