Italian wrongful arrest award
An Italian man who was arrested and served seven years in jail for an offence he did not commit has been awarded $4mn in compensation.
He was arrested for drug dealing in 1993, and sentenced to 18 years, but the police later admitted they had arrested the wrong
man – he drove the same type of sports car as a well know drug dealer in Milan. He had been forced to sell his successful
business, and members of his family had suffered clinical depression, and his fiancée had left him.
