The long-awaited soft opening of the new trademark registrationsystem finally commenced on 1 October 2020, paving the way
for theimplementation of a new, comprehensive and structured intellectual property(IP) regime in Myanmar. The passing of the
new Trademarks Law (the law) wouldmark a step forward for Myanmar, where businesses have traditionally had torely on colonial-era
laws to protect their intellectual property. As there hasnever been a formal trademark registration system and registry in
place inMyanmar previously, this new legislation will allow brand owners to availthemselves of a modern IP regime in line
with international standards.
