CSU PREDICTS ABOVE AVERAGE MAJOR HURRICANE LANDFALL

The US continues to face an above-average probability of a major hurricane landfall in 2020, according to the latest forecast from the Colorado State University (CSU) team. CSU’s July forecast has indicated a 69% probability that a hurricane of category 3 or greater intensity will make landfall somewhere on the US coastline in 2020. This compares with a 52% average across the past century. CSU’s latest forecast maintains its expectation for an above-average level of activity in the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season. The forecasting unit said it expects 20 named storms, nine hurricanes and four major hurricanes to form in 2020. This compares with an average during the period between 1981 and 2010 of around 12 named storms, six to seven hurricanes and two to three major hurricanes.
