Liability for injury in stolen vehicle

Under s151 of the Road Traffic Act 1988, a motor liability insurer is in effect required to satisfy any judgment obtained by the victim of the user of the vehicle. There is, however, an exception for a passenger who knew or ought to have known that the vehicle had been stolen or unlawfully taken. In McMinn v McMinn [2006] EWHC 827 (QB) Keith J explored the scope of that exception.
