The Syrian coast and adjacent mountains form the Alawi heartland, a likely last redoubt of resistance for President alAssad’s forces if Damascus falls. Insurgents are less likely to deploy heavy weapons in fighting for coastal cities than inland; however fighting on the coast is likely to intensify by mid-2013.
