£1.75 million settlement for severed foot
A man who had his right foot severed in an accident at work has received £1.75 million in an out of court settlement. The
machine operator was working alone at night using a specialist log-cutting machine. When a log became jammed in one of the
boxes, he climbed in with a chainsaw, in accordance with the training he had received at the start of his employment, and
attempted to cut the jammed log in half. When he attempted to climb out of the box he slipped, trapping his right foot between
the log and the side of the box. He was then dragged down into the machine. After liability was admitted, the claim was settled
£1.75 million, including £166,000 in interim payments.
