£400,000 damages for amputated leg
A refuse collector who was run over by his colleague and had to have his leg amputated has received £400,000. He was getting
down from the refuse collection lorry, when he was caught by the vehicle’s front wheel and fell to the ground. The driver
didn’t notice he had fallen and drove on and over his foot, stopping the heavy vehicle on top of it. The driver had failed
to check that he was safely clear of the vehicle before moving on. He was able to return to work for the council within 10
months, but was unable to return to collecting bins and is now a street care assistant which is a lower paid job. The council
admitted 80% liability and settled the claim out of court.
