20.5, crash, fatalities

Indonesia: local air investigators sifted through the charred remains of a military transport aircraft which crashed into homes and burst into flames, killing at least 99 people. Investigators were trying to understand why the Lockheed C-130 (Hercules) went down during a routine flight and had yet to find anything pointing to a possible cause of the crash. Military officials said the nearly 30-year-old aircraft was fit to fly and that the weather was clear when it went down near an air base in East Java. Witnesses reported seeing parts of the aircraft falling from the sky and hearing explosions. The Indonesian air force said 15 people survived the crash. The aircraft was carrying more than 100 military personnel and their families, including at least 10 children. At least two people on the ground were also among those killed.
