EC poised to introduce new safety net rules

European policymakers will decide whether to introduce new rules to mandate insurance guarantee schemes in all member states before the end of 2009. Charlie McCreevy, European Commissioner for the internal market, said recently that the patchwork of schemes in Europe emerged as one of the stumbling blocks for group support proposals under Solvency II.
