Compensation for trapped hand

A man employed as a springmaker has been awarded £95,000 for the serious injuries he sustained when his hand became trapped in a machine. He was setting up a machine known as ‘Long Tom’ when it suddenly activated, trapping his left hand. He sustained a significant traumatic injury to the left hand, requiring nine operations over a period of three years including bone and skin grafts. It took a number of years for his medical condition to stabilise before medical experts said that he would be fit to return to light duties. He was unable to return to work at the company as it had gone into liquidation.
