Demurrage - Method of calculation where four lightening vessels used for discharge

This was something of a “one-off” demurrage case in which the relevant charterparty provisions were complex and not very clearly expressed. For the facts, readers are referred to the decision of Staughton J. at first instance (see LMLN 78 - 28 October 1982) where the arbitrators’ award in favour of the owners was upheld. The charterers’ appeal has now been dismissed by the Court of Appeal, which endorsed Staughton J.’s reasoning.
