The plaintiff owners of the vessel Sevonia Team chartered her to Colocotronis S.A. in 1976 for a voyage from the Persian Gulf to the US Atlantic Coast range with a cargo of crude oil. The vessel loaded 89,936 tons of oil at Khor-al-Amaya. The shippers were Iraq National Oil Company (INOC). The bill of lading was on INOC form. It provided for the cargo to be delivered at Portland, Maine:
