MALAYSIA TO INTRODUCE COMPULSORY INSURANCE FOR MAIDS

Employers in Malaysia will have to insure their foreign maids under a scheme being launched by the Malaysian government at the end of January. A 75 ringgit ($22.94) a year takaful insurance will be administered by a government-linked company, covering accident, death and medical expenses. Indonesian nationals make up the majority of the 370,000 maids employed in Malaysia. A memorandum of understanding was signed between Malaysia and Indonesia on the matter last year.
