AIR WORLDWIDE ISSUES NEW TYPHOON MODEL FOR CHINA
Massachusetts-based risk modeller AIR Worldwide has issued its new model for typhoons in China. AIR developed the model in
association with the Shanghai Typhoon Institute, whose deputy director Xudong Liang said that “with much of China’s industry
situated along the coast, typhoons have the potential to cause significant wind and flood damage”. Three primary factors add
to the flood potential along the China coast — mountainous terrain near to the sea, the South China Sea monsoon, and the potential
transformation from tropical to extratropical systems. The model generates total expected rainfall for each simulated storm,
redistributing the resulting run-off using data on soil types, land use and slope data.
