SRI LANKA SEES FIRST MICRO-INSURANCE CLAIM
The first claim made under Sri Lanka’s fledgling micro-finance insurance scheme has been honoured. The sum of 25,000 rupees
was awarded to a 67-year old woman, Murin Mataraarachchi, as compensation for the death of her 23-year old son Dimantha Danushka
Shaminda, who was killed in a road accident. Shaminda, an electrician, was the main breadwinner of the household and had taken
out the life insurance policy with HNB Assurance which introduced its micro-insurance policy in June 2006. Micro-finance is
aimed at the low-income market.
