SINGAPORE CONSIDERING COMPULSORY MEDICAL INSURANCE FOR FOREIGNERS
The Singaporean government is considering the introduction of compulsory medical insurance for foreign employees, according
to manpower minister Ng Eng Hen, speaking at the weekend. The estimated monthly premium for employers would be between S$10
and S$20 a worker, Dr Ng said. Details of the plan, which today’s

claims will be instituted from October, are expected in the next few months. About 875,500 foreigners and 480,000 permanent
residents will be affected by the changes. Singapore already requires that companies in Singapore employing foreign construction
workers purchase workers’ compensation insurance, while employers of foreign domestic helpers have to purchase a personal
accident policy. Singapore has recently been making moves to distinguish between subsidies offered for Singaporeans and charges
made to non-Singaporeans. Last month the Health ministry said that it would be withdrawing subsidies at public hospitals for
permanent residents and foreigners.
