Damages over negligent GP consultation
The family of a woman who died from meningitis, just a day after being told to go home by an out-of-hours surgery, has been
awarded £140,000 in damages. She was told she had a viral infection. The court ruled that the doctor handling her case had
been professionally negligent. The doctor denied liability. The woman died from acute bacterial meningitis. The doctor failed
to refer her to the local hospital where she would have been treated and survived.
