Privacy at work

A code of conduct drawn up by the Information Commission and due to become operative later this year sets limits on employer surveillance of workers’ use of emails and phones. Staff should have access to private email and internet accounts and blanket monitoring of use is banned. Hidden cameras may only be used (with staff consent) in criminal investigations. The commission warned the code may be cited in enforcement action against companies.
