6.1 Outline of Canada's legal environment

6.1.1 The constitutional structure of Canada

Canada is a federal state.2 The Constitution Act, 1867 is the basis of Canada's constitutional documents. This document establishes Canada's three institutions of government – the legislature, judiciary and executive branches. In addition, the Constitution Act, 1867 divides legislative jurisdiction between the Federal and Provincial Governments based on subject matter.
