International Construction Law Review

BOOK NOTICE - International Construction Arbitration Handbook

HUMPHREY LLOYD

International Construction Arbitration Handbook, 2011 Edition. By John W Hinchey and Troy L Harris. West, USA, 2011. Soft cover. ISBN 978–0–314–80180–7. Two Volumes. Vol 1: 732 pp; Vol 2 contains 51 Appendices, a Glossary, Table of Cases and Index. US$174.00.
The first edition of this work was reviewed in this Review a few years ago—see [2008] ICLR 522. The authors were either formerly with or are still with King & Spalding, LLP, Atlanta, Georgia. They are also well known to readers. Mr John Hinchey has contributed a paper in this issue (see page 29, above). Mr Troy Harris wrote about “Disclosure of Electronic Documents: The Issues and Guidelines in International Construction Arbitration” at [2009] ICLR 161. They have improved the work markedly. The text has not only been brought up to date but also, in places, rationalised and expanded with additional references to literature. Just as importantly, the work is now user-friendly. It is split between two volumes. The first volume contains Chapters 1–12 which provide the guidance that practitioners and arbitrators look for. Although some 700 pages long it is light and truly a “handbook”. The second volume contains the Appendices with conventions and treaties, arbitration laws and arbitration rules, as well as the Table of Cases and the Index. It is longer. (For future editions, the publishers might include the Table of Cases and the Index in both volumes since for, say, a hearing, practitioners might well wish to take only Volume 1.)
