Miss Woodland sustained severe brain injuries while swimming with her school class at a swimming pool in Basildon when she
was 10 years old. By her litigation friend she sued the Swimming Teachers’ Association; Beryl Stotford, who employed the swimming
teacher and the life guard; the life guard; the education authority, Essex County Council; and Basildon Council which ran
the swimming pool facilities. Beryl Stotford was an independent contractor to Essex County Council.
