Pay-to-delay costing US consumers US$3.5bn annually

Out-of-court cash settlements over patent disputes between brand name drug makers and generic companies are costing consumers US$3.5bn a year according to a report from the US Federal Trade Commission.

The FTC said the number of these so-called pay-to-delay deals rose to 19 in 2009 compared to zero in 2004.
