Who is defendant in Admiralty action in rem - The res itself or the owner of the res?

The plaintiff cargo owners alleged that some of their goods were damaged whilst being carried in the defendants’ vessel Brani Island. Delivery of the goods took place on 27 October 1979. There was a one-year time limit in the bills of lading for bringing suit.
