International Construction Law Review

INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION INSTITUTE

On 18 November 2002, the International Arbitration Institute (IAI) launched an international arbitration forum in the form of a discussion list via e-mail (list serve), believed to be the first of its kind. This forum has been created to provide members with a means of exchanging information, as well as to host worldwide debate
Registration is via the IAI website: www.iaiparis.com. Subscription is free and can be cancelled at any time. All messages posted on the list will be stored and searchable on www.iaiparis.com. (The list is moderated so that inappropriate messages will not be posted.) The site is also the source for selection of arbitrators and lawyers as it contains the CVs of over 450 arbitration specialists located in 34 countries. A search engine permits criteria searches (by nationality, country of residence and language capability) and full-text searches in virtually all the database fields.
The first discussion is to be about provisional measures and international arbitration. It stems from the proceedings of a seminar of the IAI held in May 2002 about the use of the ICC Rules for a Pre-arbitral Referee Procedure and about a declaration made by the Club of Arbitrators in Milan concerning proposals on Interim Measures in International Arbitration recently delivered to UNCITRAL.
On 1 April 2003 the IAI and the American Society of International Law (ASIL) will jointly hold a conference in Washington, DC. The topic is: “The Annulment of ICSID Awards: The Impact of Recent Decisions”. ICSID arbitrations include those relating to construction projects so the subject may be of interest to readers of this Review . For further information see below.
The chairman of IAI is Emmanuel Gaillard. Its Advisory Board comprises five prominent international arbitration specialists: Judge Mohammed Bedjaoui of Algeria, Lord Dervaird of the United Kingdom, Judge Pierre Drai of France, Professor Francisco Orrego Vicuna of Chile, Professor Jean-François Poudret of Switzerland, and Professor Hans Smit of the United States. IAI Correspondents in 31 different arbitration venues co-ordinate the regional activities of the IAI and serve as an interface between the IAI and its members located in their region.
