Marine insurance - Vessel sank after unexplained inrush of water - Whether loss proximately caused by peril of the sea

On 5 August 1978 the vessel Popi M was sailing eastwards through the Mediterranean in calm seas and fair weather when, shortly before 11 00, there was a large and sudden entry of water into her engine room through her shell plating on the port side. The engine room quickly filled with water. Water continued to fill the aftermost compartments of the vessel, and at about 18 15 she sank.
